Short But Sweet

monster.jpg

They say good things come in small packages – for others, good things come in short bursts -- like songs done in two minutes or less. I’ve always had a thing for songs that go over that the five minute mark (without you feeling that it’s going for longer than expected). It’s sort of  like the artists playing can’t get enough that they infect you with the same kind of feeling through their song. Ditties, on the other hand, are sweet. They’re like those little collectible items that people just like to keep, or unexpected rare treats that leave you wanting for more. Today’s list is my own collection of less than two minute songs that have, at one point or another, satiated my sweet tooth for little musical treats –

Holiday by wonder for all (0:58)

This song rings true to anyone who's ever needed a break, and wanted to express their feelings of fondness to someone -- with a ukelele accompaniment.

In case you missed it, which I almost did - everybody's favorite piano-pop musician Ben Folds has released an album in collaboration with my personal favorite music-loving author, Nick Hornby. If that name sounds familiar, he's the guy that wrote the book High Fidelity - which was also made into a movie with John Cusack (a movie that's also notable as the book to film translation that gave birth to Sonic Death Monkey).

If that news hasn't made you giddy with excitement, to promote the album, called Lonely Avenue, Ben Folds partnered with viral video hotshots Pomplamoose and Charlie McDonnell. Indiemusicdb.com regulars, might know these two since I've featured them before for our Video of the Week (here and here). Pomplamoose, a duo, who makes awesome original songs and equally extraordinary covers, gets it on with Ben Folds and Nick Hornby with their song Things You Think. YouTube heartthrob Charlie McDonnell on the other hand, takes a shot at making a music video for a song from the album called Saskia Hamilton. Fangirls wouldn't be disappointed as there's a *lot* of Charlie in it, and he looks damn cute too. Now, I'm just waiting for a Merton / Ben Folds collab...

The Pomplamoose vid and Charlie video are after the jump as well as the official video for From Above, the first single from Ben Folds' Lonely Avenue .

Cold Love by Ghinzu

Our Video of the Week comes all the way from Belgium with a devilishly evil track from Ghinzu called 'Cold Love'. I don't why Russian Orthodox priests are mixing a recording while one of them's exorcising the band, and what  those gyrating girls behind them all have to do it. All I know is that I couldn't stop watching, hoping to make sense of it all. And what the heck is with that burnt roast chicken at the end? On the other hand, the music was quite enjoyable :)

OK Go premieres new video

OK Go creates videos that I have the compulsion to share - so here it is. Fresh off of debuting it this morning on Ellen - this is their latest called White Knuckles. It's full of all things lovable, a great song, cute furry animals and IKEA furniture (I got two of those wastebaskets at home - they're pretty neat).

I don't usually post music news, but if it's from my fave bands, y'all gotta know about it too - even if it's a few days late.

So, Belle and Sebastian is going to release their new album next month - and they've been pretty keen on building up the hype. The latest is offering up a download of "Write About Love" - a lovely song that features Carey "Sally Sparrow" Mulligan on guest vocals. And the verdict? - I like! It's your typical Belle and Sebastian song, coupled with a duet with one of my favorite Doctor Who characters (well at least the actress who played her). What's not to like?

Belle and Sebastian have pulled all the stops in promoting this album - with a half hour webisode up on their site, that showcases new songs, a Q and A, and tongue in cheek skits on the dynamics 'making it' in the music industry today...
